There are two brands I love to a fault, Jaguar and Maserati. Unfortunately both brands are really difficult to anticipate before they just put and tell you what they are doing. Well, we know that they are planning an all electric sedan and CUV. I know my feelings on what Jaguar has been doing and setting up over the last few years, but I want to know what all of you think of all electric Jaguars?
Porsche, Jaguar, and Maserati make up a near-exotic trio and usually Porsche leads the way followed by Jaguar then Maserati. I say this because we are all excited for the electric Porsches, but I can’t imagine the feelings are as unanimous for the other brands.

Yeah, it’s cool. Why wouldn’t an all-electric Jag be okay?

Because then you don’t get to hear this while driving?

Eh. Like every single Jag in history had a great exhaust note.

I’m cool with it. Stereotypes about British electronics aside, I feel that the whole Grace, Space, Pace slogan fits really well with electric cars.

Mostly because the powertrains are the most reliable and notable aspects of Jaguars. In fact the design, powertrains, suspension tuning are the three things that completely separate them from any other luxury marque. Then add in that the electrical reliablility is the worst aspect of all British cars then you kind of see the reservations people may have.

I can dig it. As long as it still has a borderline vulgar amount of wood and leather. It really would only make your Jaaaaaag more quiet, and therefore more luxurious.

Literally the top reason I’m against electric Jags is because someone will always feel the need to make a Lucas electrics joke on every damn story.

Well it may not be all of them but if you think about it, it’s not that far off.
Also as it turns out Jag haven’t made that many engines. You got the I6, the V12 and the old V8 and of course the new V8. Talk about getting your money’s worth.

I honestly think it’s the best thing they could ever do. It’s funny that going all electric will be the savior of British cars.

I still think some form of electric setup could work. With the right R&D or partnering with another company, I think they could do it right. Think about how most electric cars get designed: super future styling that isn’t to the taste of everyone or a small city cube (Model S withstanding). Jag is known for class and elegance. If they offered an electric vehicle that wasn’t all “look at me, I’m the future!” then I think they’d be good.

Fair enough. Still, I think losing the exhaust note isn’t too big of a deal for the most part. Make it drive well and who gives a shit.

Isn’t the new V8 basically the old V8 but updated?
You’re also missing the V6 used in the S/X Types and XF, but that’s more of a modified Ford engine than the others.
But yeah, a lot of people don’t seem to know that Jag used the same I6 for over 40 years.

I’m not sure Ariel, BAC, Bowler, Caterham, Elemental, Ginetta, Lotus, Noble, Radical, TVR or Zenos would agree. That said when it comes to cars the other thing us Brits are best at that aren’t lightweight track toys is luxury cars and man, an electric Roller would be noice.

That’s fair, though one could argue that the unique character of modern Jags compared to its competitors is largely due to the sounds they make (
Jaguar has a specific divison dedicated to tuning their exhaust notes
). May just be me but a beautiful, sleek, fast Jag that that doesn’t have a lairy growl coming out the back seems kind of wrong.

Modern Jags have way too much accent lighting and way too little wood. There’s something deeply wrong with a world where you can order a Porsche with wood trimmed everything, but an XJ has a tiny little band of walnut.

Well kinda, sort of, not really, nah. They were built in the same factory using the same equipment but the 5 litre was a new engine. Aston Martin had reached the limit of what was possible from the old 4.2 so they moved onto a new engine for a new generation.
As for the Duratecs, I was never a fan of the noise they made. It wasn’t bad just a bit generic V6.

I’m fine with it, I just really hope that electric British cars get a better rep then early British cars with reliability and such...
